Two Workshop Presentations @ ACSAC 2025
© David BalensonIn early December 2025, COMSYS was represented at Annual Computer Security Applications Conference (ACSAC ‘25) in beautiful Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Hawaii, by Jan Pennekamp, who delivered two talks at co-located workshops.
The conference began after the annual commemoration of Pearl Harbor, providing Jan with a special opportunity to attend the memorial parade before ACSAC’s scientific program began.

At the Cybersecurity in Health Workshop (HealthSec ‘25), Jan presented our paper “PatDiscover”, a collaboration between COMSYS, Prof. Felix. M. Mottaghy from Nuclear Medicine at RWTH Aachen University Hospital, and Prof. Sandra Geisler from the Center for Computational Life Sciences (CCLS) that addresses pressing cybersecurity challenges in healthcare environments. The talk received very positive acclaim from the audience, underscoring both the growing relevance of information security in distributed healthcare settings and the potential impact of the work, which may, down the line, even result in improved patient treatment.
As a workshop alumnus (2020), Jan further delivered a keynote at the Learning from Authoritative Security Experiment Results (LASER ‘25) Workshop, showcasing our recent work on supporting artifact evaluation using large language models (LLMs). This research originated in one of our Research Focus Classes (RFCs) and was conducted in close collaboration with the DSMA research group, highlighting our commitment to improving reproducibility and evaluation practices (in security research). Earlier the same day, COMSYS researcher David Heye presented the corresponding paper at IEEE BigData in Macau, China. Jan’s presentation sparked extensive discussions that continued well into the conference reception.
Beyond its strong technical program, ACSAC ‘25 also offered a memorable social and cultural experience. A particular highlight was the conference dinner, a traditional Hawaiian Luau, which provided an excellent setting to connect with fellow researchers in a relaxed atmosphere and to experience local Hawaiian culture. Overall, ACSAC proved to be an inspiring venue for exchanging ideas and meeting old and new friends. We look forward to future opportunities.
We would like to thank GSO — Guidance, Skills & Opportunities e.V. and the Klaus Tschira Stiftung for covering the travel expenses.
