COMSYS @ IMC 2025

COMSYS student Michael Klopsch and COMSYS researcher Markus Dahlmanns attended this year’s Internet Measurement Conference (IMC'25). At the conference, Michael successfully presented our most recent work on active IPv6 scanning.

Michael’s talk at this year’s Internet Measurement Conference (IMC'25), highlighted how leveraging the NTP Pool for IPv6 address-sourcing leads to different results of active Internet scans. Specifically, as described in our paper, we found numerous services running on consumer products that are underrepresented in state-of-the-art IPv6 hitlists and also show that the deployments found via NTP-sourced addresses are often less secure. Additionally, we identified first (covert) actors adopting NTP-based address sourcing in their scanning. Michael accomplished the foundational research for this paper in his Bachelor’s thesis “Time to Find Addresses: Evaluating use of NTP Pool Data for Internet Measurements” which Markus advised.

Overall, IMC, again, was a great conference to discuss recent topics in Internet measurements. Beyond the conference, there was also some time to explore Madison and visit the (free) Zoo.
